BDC Foods Pvt Ltd (Bhawani Dairy)
Established in 2019, BDC Foods Pvt Ltd, also known as Bhawani Dairy, is based in Chitwan District, a dairy hub in Nepal. The company processes around 10,000 litres of milk daily, producing a range of dairy products. Half of the milk goes into making chhurpi, a unique product marketed internationally as a dog chew, while the rest is used for traditional dairy items. Bhawani Dairy’s product line-up includes yogurt, paneer, lassi, butter, ghee, chhurpi and pasteurised milk.
Bhawani Dairy operates primarily in Bharatpur, Chitwan, in Bagmati Province, employing a team of 45 individuals.
Support Growth and Expansion of Agribusiness through Innovation and Product Diversification
On a £102,874 budget (£34,842 from CASA), this 12-month project from January to December 2024 included technical assistance and grants that supported Bhawani Dairy in enhancing product quality, expanding production capacity, and boosting exports of chhurpi and ghee. CASA helped provide Good Manufacturing Practices training for 1,530 dairy farmers from 17 cooperatives in Chitwan District so that smallholder farmers could improve milk quality and adopt climate adaptation measures like cattle waste management.
In the initial phase, CASA helped Bhawani Dairy create an investment memorandum to secure funding for growth. The company sought a debt investment of £36,774 but secured a £193,000 loan from Nabil Bank that enabled Bhawani Dairy to broaden its product line and increase production. CASA also supported development of a digital management system, which initially included procurement, production, and stock management modules and later added a sales module, outlet management module, and HR module.
CASA also strengthened Bhawani Dairy’s marketing, enabling it to enter four new markets in Mugling, Bara, Phisling, and Abu Khaireni and focus on digital and below-the-line (BTL) strategies. The social media marketing budget was increased by nearly 100% after CASA’s support, resulting in a 183% increase in social media reach by the end of the partnership. Facebook alone achieved a reach of 962,000, while improved consumer impressions were driven by a combination of digital campaigns and billboard advertisements. CASA also assisted in improved branding for domestic sales (new packaging for 12 product lines, with a total of 56 designs), supporting infrastructure improvements, and conducting a process audit to optimise energy use, cut costs, and lower emissions.
