Phase 1: state of play review of climate risk assessment guidance.

Abstract

  • This report reviews the current state of play of climate risk assessment practice and guidance for financial institutions, including guidance related to disclosures under a number of voluntary and regulatory frameworks.

  • In particular, this report reviews sector-specific guidance for agriculture and agribusiness investments.

  • It is recommended that common ground should be sought on key factors, to help improve comparability of climate-related disclosures, as well as to start to build up a body of best practice and enhancement of tools and methods for future uses. Regarding smallholder-generated data for climate risk assessment, current examples remain few and far between partly because of the high capital costs for smallholders to invest in high-tech monitoring equipment. Financial institutions should look to support pioneering organisations that are supporting innovative approaches to smallholder-generated data systems, and invest in scaling-out successful pilot projects.
