Crisis Response – Promotion of Forage-based Dairy Production as an Alternative to Rising Feed Price

This 18-month project (January 2023 – June 2024) had a total budget of £56,560 of which £27,071 from CASA included both technical assistance and grants. CASA supported Goras to launch the commercial production of forage feed and ensure continued access to quality, affordable forage for smallholder producers. Under CASA support, 15 varieties of forage seeds were sent to NARC and SQCC for registration and 1,050 kg of forage seeds with newly designed packaging and 800 saplings were sold. Forage farming trainings and awareness campaigns were provided to 3,807 farmers from nine dairy cooperatives in Provinces 2, 3 and 5 (78% women) and three farmers from Nawalparasi District, Province 5, were contracted as commercial forage seed producers.

With few registered companies in Nepal working in forage seeds, Goras has significant potential to reach many dairy farmers. CASA provided both financial and technical support to help Goras revive the Nepal Forage Development Association as “Pasture and Forage Forum Nepal”; 45 new members were inducted into the forum including forage seed producers and farmers. Advocacy for the promotion of commercial green forage and forage seed production was, and continues to be, done through the newly established forum in association with NARC and DLS.
