Maggot Farm Ltd

Established in 2019, Maggot Farm Ltd is an inclusive distribution chain, located in Kamonyi District of Southern Province. Now with six full-time employees, it was launched by two young agri-preneurs to address a production gap in raw materials for animal feed. CASA primarily worked with this partner because of their extensive knowledge acquired from the support of FCDO through IMSAR, and to demonstrate to investors a business case that black soldier fly (BSF) production is a sector that can benefit the livestock value chain as an alternative to soya in feed production. Maggot Farm recently acquired a greenhouse equipped with the necessary facilities to produce BSF larvae. They are presently producing 2.5-3.0 tonnes of fresh BSF larvae per cycle (45 days) and 7.5 tonnes of organic fertiliser (compost) per month. Contact: maggotfarmltd@gmail.com

Scaling Up Black Soldier Fly Rearing for Sustainable Animal Feed Production Using Local Raw Materials

Started in August 2024, this 12-month project is supporting Maggot Farm to deliver its expansion plan to hit annual production targets of 27 tonnes of larvae and 135 tonnes of organic fertiliser for sale to smallholders. The strategy for increasing BSF production revolves around expanding their greenhouse facilities, augmenting the number of shelves, increasing the quantity of crates, installation of water and electricity, and increasing the capacity of the hammer milling machine. Maggot Farm is also being linked to Ndahimana Chicken Growers (another CASA partner) to collect waste from their slaughtering plant that can serve as feed for their own larvae. This will allow Maggot Farm to grow and supply more BSF larvae directly to smallholders as a sustainable protein source for livestock, and to supply BSF larvae as a protein source in animal feed production to Platinum Agribusiness (a local feed manufacturer and also a CASA partner) to test the use of BSF in feed production.

The total project cost of £85,150 includes CASA support of £46,910: a grant of £25,000 to buy and equip a greenhouse and technical assistance worth £21,910 to support Maggot Farm with fiduciary capacity building, investment readiness support and business plan development. Currently working with four institutions and four farmers, Maggot Farm is seeking £40,000 in debt or equity financing to purchase processing equipment.
