Maggot Farm Ltd
Established in 2019, Maggot Farm Ltd is an inclusive distribution chain located in Kamonyi District of Southern Province. Now with six full-time employees, it was launched by two young agri-preneurs to address a production gap in raw materials for animal feed. CASA primarily worked with this partner because of their extensive knowledge acquired from the support of FCDO through IMSAR, and to demonstrate to investors a business case that Black Soldier Fly (BSF) production is a sector that can benefit the livestock value chain as an alternative to soya in feed production. Maggot Farm started with one greenhouse equipped with the necessary facilities to produce BSF larvae.

Scaling Up Black Soldier Fly Rearing for Sustainable Animal Feed Production Using Local Raw Materials
Started in August 2024, this 10-month project supported Maggot Farm to prepare for its expansion plan to hit annual production targets of 27 tonnes of larvae and 135 tonnes of organic fertiliser for sale to smallholders. The total project budget was £85,150 including CASA support of £46,910: a grant of £25,000 to buy and equip a second greenhouse and technical assistance worth £21,910 to support Maggot Farm with fiduciary capacity building, investment readiness support and business plan development. After installation of water and solar electricity and sourcing organic waste from local markets in Kigali, as well as from industries such as Inyange and Skol, they are currently producing 2.5-3.0 tonnes of fresh BSF larvae per month and 7.5 tonnes of organic fertiliser (compost) per month from the two greenhouses.
150 nearby smallholder poultry producers have been mobilised as potential BSF out-growers to further expand production and 30 of them received training and BSF “seed” with nets to start home BSF units. Maggot Farm is already buying approximately 160 kg/month from those 30 out-grower farmers at RWF600/kg. This number will increase when all 150 farmers have been trained and started supplying. Additionally, Maggot Farm is now supplying 125 smallholder farmers with packaged BSF larvae feed additive and developing a network of 350 agro-dealers for distribution of BSF additive, Maggot Farm have recently received a £90,000 grant from LuxDev that is also expected to trigger a commercial loan for expansion.
Maggot Farm has also been linked to other CASA partners Platinum Agribusiness and Fine Fish, who have agreed to pilot BSF-based feeds. Fine Fish is currently conducting a CASA-supported feasibility study to assess the potential of BSF-based feed for implementation prior to conducting trials for replacing part of the soya-cake in fish feed with BSF larvae. Maggot Farm seeks further debt or equity financing for further expansion and to purchase processing equipment. The strategy for increasing BSF production revolves around expanding their greenhouse facilities, augmenting the number of shelves, increasing the quantity of crates, and increasing the capacity of the hammer milling machine.
