Matribhumi Krishi Samagri Udhyog

Established in May 2014, Matribhumi operates a factory in Chitwan (Province 3) and sells over ten tonnes of organic fertilisers monthly. During peak planting seasons, production exceeds 80 tonnes with temporary staff hires. The company supplies fertilisers (mainly for vegetable production) and partners with 62 agricultural cooperatives, primarily in the Terai region. In addition to fertilisers, Matribhumi offers soil supplements – Bhumi Care and Bhumi Gold – both officially registered with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Food Security, Environment, and Soil Management Division. Matribhumi’s operations span all provinces, with its Chitwan factory serving as the production hub. It has ten full-time employees and regularly hires temporary staff based on demand. Matribhumi operates a unique business model that avoids selling to large-scale government tenders, agrovets, and private actors. Instead, it focuses on direct sales to agricultural cooperatives, strengthening its connection with smallholder farmers. In addition to organic fertilisers, the company produces soil conditioners and micronutrients to enhance soil fertility. Matribhumi also actively educates farmers on the effective use of organic fertilisers and supplements through training programmes.

Promotion of Organic Fertiliser as an Alternative to Rising Chemical Fertiliser Price and Its Unavailability
This eight-month project was designed as part of the Ukraine crisis response. CASA provided both technical assistance and grants, contributing £27,364 to support Matribhumi’s initiatives, including comprehensive training on management practices to Matribhumi staff to help streamline their operations, a feasibility study in selected areas of Provinces 2, 3 and 5 to identify specific pocket areas of demand for their product, and training to lead farmers on examining soil composition and correct application of organic fertilisers. Unfortunately, the company experienced a series of both personal and market-related challenges which severely constrained their ability to see through the remaining planned farmer training and demo-plot activities and the partnership was closed a few weeks early without completing.
